Dung beetle resistance to desiccation varies within and among populations

چکیده
The study of desiccation resistance and its underlying traits is key to understanding species responses changes in water availability, especially the context predicted increases frequency severity droughts due climate change. We performed laboratory experiments using dung beetles, important ecosystem service providers, investigate variations physiological within species, both at population individual levels. Desiccation resistance, loss tolerance content were measured lowland mountain populations whether vary (i) according elevation across four (ii) sex or male morphology (minor major morphs) two if these consistent species. Our results showed that beetles varies found varied between populations, but no differences for other such as tolerance. Moreover, females, minor males suggest females more resistant than minors majors, species-dependent. analysis hierarchical levels, population, emphasizes importance considering within-species variability predictions how may respond future climatic conditions. Predictions environmental change produce different conclusions they rely on observations from single take into account only a limited range phenotypes per population.

A 'metaphising' dung beetle.
You may have seen the film Microcosmos, produced in 1996 by the French biologists Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perrenou. It does not star humans, but much smaller creatures, mostly insects. The filmmakers’ magnifying camera transposes the viewer into the world of these organisms. For me, Microcosmos is not an ordinary naturalist documentary; it is an exercise in metaphysics. One sequence in the f...
متن کاملTrait-dependent response of dung beetle populations to tropical forest conversion at local and regional scales.
Comparative analyses that link information on species' traits, environmental change, and organism response have rarely identified unambiguous trait correlates of vulnerability. We tested if species' traits could predict local-scale changes in dung beetle population response to three levels of forest conversion intensity within and across two biogeographic regions (the Neotropics and Afro-Eurasi...
متن کاملDung beetle movements at two spatial scales
To understand the dynamics of spatially structured populations, we need to know the level of movements at different spatial scales. This paper reports on Aphodius dung beetle movements at two scales: movements between dung pats within pastures, and movements between pastures. First, I test an assumption common to many recent models of spatially structured populations – that the probability of a...
متن کاملThe Dung Beetle Dance: An Orientation Behaviour?
An interesting feature of dung beetle behaviour is that once they have formed a piece of dung into a ball, they roll it along a straight path away from the dung pile. This straight-line orientation ensures that the beetles depart along the most direct route, guaranteeing that they will not return to the intense competition (from other beetles) that occurs near the dung pile. Before rolling a ne...
متن کاملFrom coprophagy to predation: a dung beetle that kills millipedes.
The dung beetle subfamily Scarabaeinae is a cosmopolitan group of insects that feed primarily on dung. We describe the first case of an obligate predatory dung beetle and contrast its behaviour and morphology with those of its coprophagous sympatric congeners. Deltochilum valgum Burmeister killed and consumed millipedes in lowland rainforest in Peru. Ancestral ball-rolling behaviour shared by o...
